John Paul The Great
Karol Jozef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since
his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of
Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on May 18, 1920.
Throughout his early twenties, and during World War II, he had to work in
a Nazi-run rock quarry to earn a living and to avoid being deported to
Germany.
In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he
began courses in the clandestine seminary of Krakow, run by Cardinal Adam
Stefan Sapieha, archbishop of Krakow, and was ordained to the priesthood
by Archbishop Sapieha in Krakow on November 1, 1946. He carried out his
priesthood under the constant watchful eye of Poland's communist regime.
The Cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave of
October 1978, and he took the name of John Paul II. His election sent
cheers through his native Poland since he was the first Slav ever to take
the seat of St. Peter.
His pontificate, one of the longest in the
history of the Church, lasted nearly 27 years. During that time he would
change the image of the papacy forever, with a mass appeal never before
seen in the history of the Church.
John
Paul The Great takes you through the extraordinary life of
one of the 21st century's greatest men.

Testimony is a
groundbreaking feature film documentary event that chronicles the untold
story of Pope John Paul II, a man who touched the lives of billions, and
was one of the 20th century's most influential leaders.
Told through never-before-seen archival footage,
historical recreations, and key interviews with the Pontiff's trusted
advisor of 40 years, Testimony
is an unprecedented look at the private spiritual life and public persona
of Karol Wojtyla, a man whose lifelong devotion to God and humanity
eventually earned him the title of Pope John Paul II.
Narrated by Michael York and featuring music by
Oscar winning composer Vangelis, Testimony
was filmed in secret, off-limits corners of the Vatican, and is full of
new and fascinating revelations about the Pope. For instance, did you know
that...
- Pope John Paul II was stabbed during a second failed assassination
attempt that was kept secret by the Vatican...until now.
- Pope John Paul II liked to disguise himself and sneak out of the Vatican
to mix with ordinary people.
- The Pontiff began his career as an actor, and had a great talent for
Karaoke.
- His Holiness once performed an exorcism.
These are just a few of the fascinating
discoveries you will make in Testimony,
a once-in-a-lifetime DVD event that can be shared with friends and family
for years to come.

Pope John Paul II
This epic film follows
Karol Wojtyla's journey from his youth in Poland through his late days on
the Chair of St. Peter. It explores his life behind the scenes: how he
touched millions of people and changed the face of the Church and the
world; how he defended the dignity of mankind. Jon Voight's powerful,
Emmy-nominated performance as John Paul II was widely praised, as was Cary
Elwes as the young Karol.
Shot on location in Rome and Poland in close
connection with the Vatican, this is the definitive epic film on the life
of Pope John Paul II.
Watching
this film has renewed in me a sense of profound gratitude to God for
having given the Church and the world a Pope of such an exalted human and
spiritual nature. - Pope Benedict XVI
DVD Features: Language: English, Subtitles: Spanish,
Widescreen, Dolby Digital, Special Features: 16 Page Collector's Booklet
with Exclusive Photos, Interviews, Deleted Scenes, Special Cast Interviews
with Jon Voight, Cary Elwes and others, Behind the Scenes, The Making of
the Movie, Footage of the World Premiere Screening at the Vatican with

Great Souls: Pope John Paul II
How a young Polish Catholic boy went from an
aspiring actor and an athlete to become the first non-Italian pope in 400
years is a dramatic story. How John Paul used his high office to undermine
and help destroy Communism in Eastern Europe while at the same time
transforming the Papacy onto a world stage was revolutionary and
inspiring, if not controversial at times.
Filmed on location in Poland, Rome, London, and
the United States, leading churchmen, friends and colleagues, historians,
journalists, and his personal biographer examine the character and forces
that enabled John Paul II to be acclaimed universally as one of the most
important personalities in the twentieth century. |
