St.
Patrick: Apostle of Ireland
Who was St. Patrick? The man that came to be the patron saint of Ireland
was an ordinary man who accomplished the extraordinary by placing his
faith in God. Originally sent to Ireland in the 5th century as a bishop
to lead Irish Christians, Patrick chose instead to bring Christianity to
those irish not yet converted, and did so without bloodshed. As a result
of his life and work, there emerged a uniquely Celtic form of
Christianity, a religion firmly Chrstian in belief yet not far removed
from the traditions, practice and law of the Irish. Director Dave
Tennant takes the viewer on an emotionally moving and visually dramatic
rendition of the life of Ireland's Patron Saint. Filmed entirely in
Ireland, the film follows the story of both the man and the saint,
unraveling myth and history, with commentary from Father Frank Fahey of
Ballintubber Abbey and Michael Slaven, author of The Book of Tara.

The Passion of Bernadette
Following up the acclaimed best-selling movie, BERNADETTE, the story of
the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous, this
beautiful Jean Delannoy film tells the rest of the story of her life after
the Marian visions - the life that made Bernadette a saint. The grotto at
Lourdes is flourishing with many pilgrims, and Bernadette leaves to enter
the convent of the Sisters of Nevers to dedicate her life to God. Under
the harsh rule of the Novice Mistress who "doesn't believe in
apparitions", Bernadette, now Sister Marie Bernard, begins her life
of achieving sanctity through prayer, faith, suffering and a deep charity
toward all. With another moving performance by actress Sydney Penny, this
film reveals the incessant illness and suffering that St. Bernadette
patiently, even cheerfully endured throughout her life in the convent,
often repeating her prayer "to suffer and offer it to God."
After her death in 1879 at the age of 35 years old, when her body was
exhumed years later, she was found to be incorrupt, and her body was
enclosed in a glass case that resides in the chapel of the Sisters of
Nevers where millions have come to see the "little saint of
Lourdes." 1 hr 46 min.

Therese
Her mother died when she was four years old; her surrogate mother
abandoned her a few years later, plunging Thérèse Martin (Lindsay Younce)
into a mental collapse. Then something miraculous happened. At
the age of 14 she underwent a mysterious conversion and fell deeply in

the way to the Vatican, where she boldly stepped forth at a papal audience
to beg for permission to become a Carmelite nun. In the monastery,
Therese, a teenage girl, gained insights that breathe fresh air into the
Catholic Church and transformed the world. Challenged by the austere,

John Paul The Great
Karol Jozef
Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the
papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50
kilometers from Krakow, on May 18, 1920. Throughout his early twenties,
and during World War II, he had to work in a Nazi-run rock quarry to earn
a living and to avoid being deported to Germany.
In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he
began courses in the clandestine seminary of Krakow, run by Cardinal Adam
Stefan Sapieha, archbishop of Krakow, and was ordained to the priesthood
by Archbishop Sapieha in Krakow on November 1, 1946. He carried out his
priesthood under the constant watchful eye of Poland's communist regime.
The Cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave of
October 1978, and he took the name of John Paul II. His election sent
cheers through his native Poland since he was the first Slav ever to take
the seat of St. Peter.
His pontificate, one of the longest in the
history of the Church, lasted nearly 27 years. During that time he would
change the image of the papacy forever, with a mass appeal never before
seen in the history of the Church.
John
Paul The Great takes you through the extraordinary life of
one of the 21st century's greatest men.

Great Souls: Pope John Paul II
How a young
Polish Catholic boy went from an aspiring actor and an athlete to become
the first non-Italian pope in 400 years is a dramatic story. How John Paul
used his high office to undermine and help destroy Communism in Eastern
Europe while at the same time transforming the Papacy onto a world stage
was revolutionary and inspiring, if not controversial at times.
Filmed on location in Poland, Rome, London, and
the United States, leading churchmen, friends and colleagues, historians,
journalists, and his personal biographer examine the character and forces
that enabled John Paul II to be acclaimed universally as one of the most
important personalities in the twentieth century. |
